Oct. 16-24, 1900

	       			W.E. Costley. at. home.near Middle bosque creek
			Tuesday October the 16th 1900 hundred Opened up a nice morning Some 
			what cloudey wind from North East earley but dull in it motion not 
			Stiring no great deal The thermometer registers at an earley hour 
			to day at 58  Degrees tempature. My wife and my Self arose from 
			our bed of Slumber quite late this morning on account of not 
			feeling very well but eventually i a rose from my bed clothed my 
			person having a Severe headache then built on a fire in the fire 
			place by that time my wife was out. of bed clothes on readey for 
			buisines So She went to work and Soon prepared our mornings meal 
			as i had built a fire in the Stove readey for her work during the 
			time i fed the fowls and hogs as i did not bring my teem down from 
			the field at that time So Soon as our morning meal was Served then 
			placed on the table me and my wife Seated our Selves too the table 
			then portaken of our mornings meal, when we were through with the 
			mornings meal my wife proceeded too mild (milk) her cows whilst 
			i went too picking cotton South east from my house beyond the rock 
			fence picking it over the Second time i picked untill about Eleven 
			Oclock then qu(i)t of(f) come too the house then walked up too my 
			upper field brough my teem down too the house put the geer on them 
			hitched them too my wagon. then my wife and my Self mounted in too 
			the wagon i then drove too the bosque too water the teem and to 
			hall a barrel of water after the teem had drank and i had filled 
			the barrel with water i then drove for my place after arriving at 
			the Spott i then unhitched my teem pull(ed) the geer off of then 
			(them) then fed the teem. after i was through i taken my walking 
			Stick and walked down in the direction of the woods that i hall 
			wood from to look for a claw hammer that i lost on yesterday after 
			greesing of my wagon as i had to have it too loosen one of the nuts 
			on the fore Spindle of my wagon but could not find it. Then my 
			(wife) prepared our noons meal we then Seated our Selves too the 
			table then portaken of our meal. after we were through i then. 
			taken a rest for a bit then taken a Spell at reading the news after 
			i was through i taken my Sack walked too the cotton patch and 
			began to pick cotton again. and picked  untill about one hour
			by the Sun i then fed my teem and went to picking cotton a gain, 
			and picked untill near Sundown from which i left off work a gain 
			and hope (helped) my wife to Stake her calves out on the grass i 
			then fed my male then watered my teem. after i returned from the 
			creek in a Short while. J.M. Costley drove up in a too horse hack 
			with his children we then taken his teem from the hack and fed them. 
			i then taken, my teem too the upper field and turned them in too 
			graze. we then walked back too the house and in a Short while my 
			wife. had the evenings meal Served and on the table and announced 
			readey to be eat So we seated our Selv(e)s to the table then portaken 
			of the evening meal. after we were through, we moved in too our bed 
			room too a good fire, then my wife and J.M.Costley had long conversation 
			about the death of his wife whilst i was hard at work recording of the 
			labor that was performed by my wife and my Self. this has been a very 
			warm day although the wind has been from the North east and late in 
			the after noon of to day there was a considerable cloud a rose in the 
			North west but as the day passed a way the cloud disappeared. Now as 
			the days work is finished we will go too our bed of repose by first 
			asking the Lord to gard and protect us through the present night as 
			he has through the day just past and gone, and when done with these 
			frail bodys of ours to hand us down to our grave in peace with the 
			(Thee)b and all man Kind and in heaven Save us is my prayer too night

			home on Tuesday evening October the 16th AD 1900 hundred, W.E.Costley

          			 W.E. Costley at home.near.Middle Bosque creek
			Wednesday October the 17th AD 1900-Opened up quite a nice morning 
			wind from the N.W. earley in the morning Some wind cloudey The 
			thermometer at an earley hour this morning registered 60 Degrees 
			tempature. we are out of bed quite late this morning on the account 
			of being up So late on the last night past. but eventually we all 
			arose from our bed of rest clothed our person then went to work as 
			usual. J.M. Costley.built a fire in the fire place whilst i built 
			a fire in the Stove then my wife proceeded too prepare the mornings 
			meal i did nothing before we eat our mornings meal but feed my hogs 
			and and  build the fire in the Stove but it was but a Short while 
			untill the mornings meal was Served and placed on the table and 
			announced ready to be eat we then Seated our Selves too the table 
			in companey with J.M.Costley and four of his Children first childs 
			name being the oldest is as follows Lilly Second in age is Edney 
			the third one Laura and John Costley being four in number we all 
			eat our mornings meal after we were through then we all had a 
			general conversation in regard to J M Costley conditon as he had 
			lost his best friend on earth and was at a loss to Know what course 
			to pursew with his young familey that was left too his care and 
			protection being mother less Similar to thousands of others in the 
			Same condition. after getting throug talking over our troubles and 
			trials hear on earth Jack Costley geered his teem being too Small 
			mules but very peart hitched them too his hack. then we mounted 
			in the hack and drove too Crawford after arriving at the place we 
			dismounted from his hack then taken the teem from the hack and 
			tied them up then remained in the town for about three hours. we 
			then hitched up the teem drove down too the Depot and loaded on 
			Some potatoes that George and Jinnie Frownfelter Shipped too me 
			from Joshua Johnson County. Texas. after getting of then (them) 
			loaded intoo the hack we then drove for my place of abode after 
			arriving at my place we dismounted from the hack then Jack fed 
			them Some Sheaf oats. we then come in door bring the potatoes as 
			we come after getting them intoo the hall i opened the Sack and 
			taken them out of the Sack and Spred them out on the floor as a 
			great many of them were rotten. by that time my wife had the noons 
			meal Served and on the table and announce readey to be eat we then 
			Seated our Selves too the table then portaken of our noons meal. 
			when through we then taken a rest for Some little talking over 
			our affairs of life and at about half past too Oclock this evening
			J M Costley hitched his mules too his hack them (then) him and 
			his children mounted in the hack then drove out to Mrs. Graves 
			his mother(in-Law)lass where he intended to leave his children. 
			as he aimed at going back too his place of abode. in Mills County 
			texas. after he left i walk up too my field above the Railroad and 
			brought my teem down too the house than taken them too Middle Bosque 
			too water after they drank i brought them back too the lot then 
			fed them i then diped the water out of the barrel on my wagon and 
			put it in one on the ground in order to hall a nother barrel of 
			water later on. after getting of the water out of the barrel i 
			then mounted on my horse rode over too the Bosque breaks then 
			chopped wood untill the Sun was a bout one hour high in the 
			evening. i then mounted on my horse ax in hand then rode for my 
			place of abode, after arriving at my place i dismounted from my 
			horse pulled my Saddle off of him then brought it indoors and 
			hung it up in my hall i then geered my teem hitched them too 
			my wagon then my wife and my Self mounted in the wagon i then 
			drove for Middle Bos(que) to water my teem and to hall a barrel 
			of water, after my teem drank and i got the barrel filled i then 
			drove back too my house. after arriving at the place we dismounted 
			the wagon i then unhitched my teem from the wagon taken the 
			geer off of them then taken them too my field above the Railroad 
			after Securing the gates i then walked back too my lot then. fed 
			the pigs by that time my wife had the meal Served and on the table 
			then announced readey to eat. we then Seated our Selves too the 
			table a lone then portaken of our evenings meal. after we were 
			through with the meal my wife attended too her Supper table and 
			put evry thing a way in good order. we then moved in too our bed 
			room She taken her old Stand with light in hand and read the news 
			after a bit i began to record the labors that had been performed 
			during of the day by my wife and my Self has not been very will 
			all day She Still Suffers with a pain in her Stomach and Side with 
			a Severe pain although She has been up and doing all day Sewing on a
			Shirt and doing other work a round the premises. this has been 
			quite a warm day all the way through. now as the days work is done 
			with we will go too our bed of repose by first asking the Lord to 
			gard and protect us through the present night as he has through 
			the day just passed and gone. and when done with these frail bodys 
			of ours to hand us down too our grave in peace with the (Thee) and 
			all man Kind and in heaven Save us is my prayer too night-Amen

				Jack Costley left my house on Wednesday evening at 
			about half past too Oclock to day being the 17th day of October 1900

			Thursday October the 18th AD 1900 hundred Opened up quite a cloudy 
			and warm wind from         what little there were in circulation. 
			much like rain and did come a Shower earley in the morning then 
			passed on. my wife and my Self a rose quite late this morning on 
			the account of being rather Sleepy headed but at last we a rose 
			from our bed of rest then drest(dressed) our Selves and went to 
			work as usual. I prepared the wood for the Stove then my wife 
			proceeded to prepare our mornings meal whilst i did the feeding 
			of the fowls and hogs a bout the time i were through feeding 
			my wife announced the meal readey for too be eat we then Seated 
			our Selves too the table and portaken of our mornings meal after 
			we were through with the meal my wife milked  my cows or her cows 
			in Stead of mine. whilse i went to work to dipping of the water 
			out of the barrel on the wagon. in order that i could have the 
			wagon to hall Andy W. Right a load of wood at Crawford So Soon 
			as i got the barrel empted i the(n) put the Side board on my 
			wagon neat to do was to geer my teem then hitch them too my 
			wagon by that time my wife had her cows milked So we mounted 
			in too my wagon. i then drove too the Bosque brakes after the 
			wood for Write. after getting of it loaded i then drove too my  
			place after arriving at the Spot my wife dismounted her Self 
			form the wagon and remained at home untill i could take the 
			wood too Crawford to Andy Write. after arriving at his place 
			i unloaded the wood he then paid me one dollar and a half for 
			the Same i then drove back in too Crawfor(d) to C.A. Standifers 
			and Jourdans drug Store dismounted and baught Some writing paper 
			also Some onions and envelops i then mounted in my wagon and drove 
			for my place after arriving at my place of a bode i unhitched 
			my teem from my wagon then fed them with the geer on come indoors 
			washed my hands and face then eat my noons meal being rather late 
			in the day that my wife had prepared for her and i after we were 
			through She then taken care of her dinner table after She was 
			through she then went to sewing on her machine making me a 
			Shirt to keep the cold out this winter The Thermometer at this 
			writing being half after too-Oclock in the after noon of too day 
			Registered 74 Degrees tempature. it is with difficult matter to 
			asertain from what direction the wind is from for it is Scarsley 
			moving from any direction pirfectly motion less but i am in 
			cline to beleave it is from the South east after about three 
			Oclock this evening i taken my ax waked(walked) across the branch 
			on the hill beyonds then chopped wood untill late in the evening. 
			i then Stoped off work come too the house hitched my teem as they
			already had the geer on then my wife and my Self mounted our Selve 
			in to the wagon i then drove for the place where i had choped the 
			wood the loaded it on my wagon i then drove for my place when i 
			arrived at the place i ungeered my teem then taken my teem too 
			middle Bosque to water after they drank i rode back too my house 
			unsaddled my horse then mounte(d) Walker and led Judy then taken 
			them too my upper field then turned them in to graze as usually i 
			than walked too the house and chopped wood for nigh and morning 
			then brought it in doors by that time my Wife had the Evening meal. 
			Served and readey to be eat we then Seated our Selves too the table 
			then portak(e) of our evenings meal when through and the Suppertable 
			cared far we then moved intoo our bed room. and my wife Kindled a 
			fire in the fire place and i commenced to make a record of our 
			days labor as we both have been quite buisey all day through. 
			and feel very much fateagued from the effects of our labor to day 
			So we will now go too our bed of repose by asking the Lord too 
			gard and protect us through the present night as he has through 
			the day just passed  and gone. and when done with these frail 
			bodys of ours too hand us down too our grave in peace with the 
			(Thee) and all man Kind and in heaven Save us is our prayer too 
			night-Amen

			Friday October the 19th AD 1900 hundred opened up quite a cloudey 
			morning very Still the air almost motionless but the pressure of 
			the air appears to be from the North east the thermometer registers 
			at an earley hour this morning at 54 Degrees tempature we were out 
			of our bed of repose quite late this morning as we rather over Slept 
			our Selves but when we did take a move, we moved huredly in order 
			to make up time when i a rose from my bed of rest i clothed my 
			person then prepared a fire in the fire place in order to have a 
			fire for my wife to come too when She a rose from her bed of repose 
			which was Shortley after the fire was Kindled after getting of her 
			clothes on She then proceeded to her Stove as i had prepared the 
			wood then Kindled the fire in the Stove. then went too prepareing 
			our mornings meal. during this while i was feeding of the fowls 
			and doing other work a round the premises. In a Shortwhile as She 
			is a very pert cook She had the mornings meal Served and on the table 
			readey for too be eat and announced readey. We then Seated our Selves 
			too the table then portaken of our first meal for the day. after we 
			were through with our meal my wife then milked her cows whilst i walked 
			out in too my cornfield and gathered a Sack of corn to feed on after 
			getting of it gathered i then brought it too the crib and fed my hogs. 
			I then proceded too the cotton patck (patch) and went to picking cottom 
			a gain. i picked untill quite late up in the day then quitt off picking 
			then brought my teem down too the house and watered and fed them. then 
			we eat our noons meal as my wife had it Served and on the table after 
			we were through my wif(e) taken care of her dinner table and put evry 
			thing in order for the next meal. whilst i went to work then finished 
			writing a letter to George Frownfelter and familey at Joshua Johnson 
			County Texas. at this writing the thermometer registers 76  Degrees 
			tempature being about too- Oclock in the after noon of to day, after
			my wife was through with her dinner table She then went to work Sewing 
			on a garment for me making of a Shirt. I began to pick cotton again 
			this evening at about three Oclock in the afternoon of to day but it 
			was quite warm to pick i finished the piece that i was picking on at or 
			near five Oclock this evening after getting through i then fed my teem 
			next to do was to unload the wood that i had in the wagon in order too 
			get the wagon to hall water on after getting of the wagon unloaded i 
			then loaded on my barrel too hall watter in. then geered and hitched 
			my teem too the wagon then my wife and my Self mounted our Selves in 
			the wagon i then drove too middle Bosque too water my teem and to hall
			a barrel of water after my teem drank and i got the barrel filled with
			water i then drove back too my house ungeered my teem then taken them 
			to my upper field north East of the Railroad then turned them in too 
			graze to night afterwards i Secured the gates to Keep them from getting 
			out i then walked back to the house and prepared wood for the  Stove 
			and fire place and brought it in doors but as i returned too the house 
			from the field i Staked the calves out a long the road as they were 
			feeding in that direction. after the out door work was finished up i
			come indoors then Eat my evenings meal as my wife had it readey for 
			me i then Seated my Self too the table a lone as She did not want to 
			eat then portaken of my evenings meal. when through i(my) wife attended 
			too the Supper table put evry thing used on the table a way for Safe 
			Keeping for the next meal. She then moved in too her bed room with her 
			ligh(t) placed on the wash Stand then went to Seewing(sewing) on a 
			garment for me with her fingers whilst i was at work at my dest 
			taking down a minute of the labor that has been done by my wife 
			and my Self and a discription of the weather it has been a very 
			cloudey warm day all the way through and Still very warm to night. 
			i am looking for a heavey norther and probably rain-as it is So 
			warm to night and Still. now as the days work is done we will 
			go too our bed of repose by first asking the Lord to gard and 
			protect us through the present night as he has through the day
			just passed and gone. And when done with these frail bodys of 
			ours to hand us down too our grave in peace with the (Thee) 
			and all man Kind and in heaven Save us is my prayer too night-Amen

			Saturday October the 20th AD 1900 hundred Opened up quite a cloudey 
			blustry morning wind from the South Strong I did not notice earley 
			this morning what the thermomenter registered as i was So buisiley 
			engaged at attending to affares a round the place but this evening 
			at Seven O clock it registered at 73  Degrees tempature. my wife 
			and my Self were out of bed quite late this morning as we were  
			rather Sleepy headed. but however we arose from our bed of of  
			Slumber clothed our person then went to work again my wife prepared
 			the morning meal whilst i fed the fowls and gathered corn out of 
			the field to feed on after when i returned from the cornfield with 
			the corne my wife called to me to come too my mornings meal. So i 
			put my Sack of corn in the cribb and responded too the call after 
			washing of my face and hands i then Seated my Self too the table 
			then hope (help) my wife too portake of the mornings meal, when we 
			were through my wife proceeded too the cowpen then milked her cows 
			whilst i fed the hogs and my male of. (Ox? file0282) after i was 
			through feeding i then taken my cotton Sack then walked down too 
			lower Side of my farm South of my house and picked over a piece of 
			ground that i had in cotton after getting done and over it i brought 
			the cotton too the house on my back after arriving at the place i put 
			the cotton in the hall of my house then taken a rest for a bit before
 			going after my teem So after getting Some what rested i brought the 
			teem from my field too the house i then put my Saddle on Walker mounted 
			my Self on him then for Middle Bosque and led old Judy to water after 
			had had drank all they wanted to dring (drink) of the nice clear cristal 
			water that the Bosque furnished for man and beast and the fowls of the 
			air i then rode back too my premises unsaddled my horse then fed them 
			as my aim at that time was to take Some wheat to mill and Some turkeys 
			to Sell but after considering of the mater over i concluded not to do 
			So. I then desided in my own mind to hitch my horse too the buggy after 
			eating of my noons meal which was Served and on the table a waiting my 
			coming and ride over too Crawford and See about the prospects of getting 
			of my wheat ground and further more the prospects what it would be to 
			dispose of the turkeys. after arriving at Crawford and making Some 
			inqury conserning my buisness i found the prospects for getting the 
			wheat ground on next monday coming also the Sale for the turkey was 
			also good after remaining in the town for a bit Old Uncle Billey Downs 
			and my Self mounted in too my buggy then drove too the west end of 
			Crawford at James Downs residence to See Old Aunt Betsey Downs that 
			once was our naber Some Several years ago and after arriving at the 
			place we dismounted from the buggy tied my horse too a post then walked 
			in doors finding my one present when we entered in Side of the dwelling 
			but Old Uncle Billey Downs hustled a round and Soon rousted the woman 
			folks too the front the first to make her appearance was Aunt Betsey 
			downs my oldest neighbor whoom i found when i moved to McLennan County 
			and She did not Know me the next one to come was James Dow(n)s wife of 
			course She did not Know any thing a bout me, but however Old Uncle Billey 
			Down gave my as inter ducktion to Mrs James Downs So that mades us all at 
			home again but A.G. Black was So clost at our heels after the old folks 
			to go home and Spend a few days with him. So that made the time Short in 
			forming new acquantance with Old Aunt Betsey Dow(n)s. It taken W.G. Black
			his Daughter and Mrs James downs to load her in the wagon but however 
			after getting the load in the wagon they went there way rejoising. Whilst
			Uncle Billey Downs and my Self mounted in my buggy and followed Soot by 
			driving after there track to Crawford too where i left the old man to 
			join his croud expecting to See them Soon a gain. after getting through 
			with my buisiness in the town of Crowford i then mounted in  my buggy 
			then drove for my place of abod. after arriving at my place i dismounted 
			from my buggy ungeered my horse then put my Saddle on him taken my  
			cotton Sack then mounted on my horse then led Judy mare down too the
			valley this side of E.D.Costleys fild then tied  
			them up and went to picking cotton as i had a piece of cotton to pick 
			out down in the valley i picked untill near night fall from which i 
			left off work and taken my teem too the Bosque to water as i returned 
			home i brought my Sack of cotton too the house with me that i had just 
			picked. after arriving at my house i dismounted from my horse taken my 
			Saddle off of him then mounted on him barback and rode to my upper 
			field and turned him and Judy mare in Side to grase (graze) to night 
			after Securing of the gate i  walked back too my house Stakng the 
			calves on the rode Side as i come. after arriving at the house i first
			put my Saddl(e) and cotton a way that i had picked this evening i then 
			fed my ox that i had tied up by that time my wife had the evenings meal 
			Served and on the table readey for to be eat. we then Seated our Selves 
			too the table then portaken of the Same, after we were through with our 
			meal, and the Suppertable cared far. we then moved in too our bed room 
			each with his and her own ligh(t) placing them as used one on the 
			washstand the other on my desk that i always occupy then went to work my
 			wife to reading the news and after She was through with that part of the 
			work She then Sewed Some buttons on one of my Shirts. Whilst i was engaged 
			in recording the Labor that was done on the premises to day by my wife and 
			my Self. this  has been a very windy day from the South and much like unto 
			falling weather. Now as our days work is done we will retire too our bed 
			ofrepose by first asking the Lord to gard and protect us through the present
			night as he has through the day just passed and gone. and when done with 
			these frail bodys of ours to hand us down too our grave in peace with the 
			(Thee) and all man Kind and in heaven Save us is our prayer too night- Amen

			Sunday the Sabbath day a day of rest and the Lords day we are commanded
			to neither work nor play for it is the Lords holey day October the 21th
			AD 1900 hundred 

			Opened up quite a nice cool morning wind from the west early in the fore 
			noon The thermometor at an earley hour this morning registered 60  Degrees 
			tempature. As usual my wife and my Self were out of our bed of repose quite 
			late this morning on the acount of being wet and damp as the drouth was 
			broken last night by a nice rain from the South and South west. which was 
			greatley neaded there were considerble lightning in the four part of the 
			night on the last night just passed in the north west. which Showed that 
			the heaviest of the rain lay in that direction passing northward, in its 
			course. After arising from our bed of repose and getting on our garments 
			i then built a fire in the Stove then my wife went to work to prepare the 
			mornings meal for we too old people as we are here just a lone whilst i 
			fed the Stock, after i were through feeding breakfast was unnounced 
			readey too be eat i then washed my hands and face, we then Seated our 
			Selves down too the breakfast table then portaken of our Sabbathe morning 
			which we have been Spared by the Higher power to live to eat, after we were 
			through with the meals vituals my wife with my assistance milked her cows 
			after She was through She then put a way her milk in good order then went 
			too work too cleaning up her Kitchen and putting evry thing in good repare 
			again. when through with that part of the work She then put her 
			Sleeping department in good Shape for the day. Whilst i went too work 
			to recording the proceedings of the beginning actions of the days 
			labors of my wife and my Self at this writing being Something near 
			nine Oclock in the morning , it has become quite clear and bright and 
			the Sun is Shining very bright and the wind, blowing Soft and blowing 
			at a reped rate from the west very bracing too the Sistem of anyone. 
			as we have had from the East for the last 18 day a very disagreeable 
			wind of a Stickley nature from which has caused more or less Sickness 
			in our locality or country for the last four months past we have occupyed 
			our time to day in reading the news papers printed in 1899 reviewing 
			then over and over again with the exception of what time it taken me 
			to go too my upper field being my horses down too the house then water 
			and feed them I then taken a rest. for Some time then prepared Stove 
			wood for my wife to prepare the noons meal but bein very late. in the 
			evening. after She had prepared the meal and placed it on the table 
			then we Seated our Selves too the table and was eating our meal and 
			was a bout half through eating when McCollem and Shafner drove up to 
			See if i had in my possession and of the Crawford advate papers 
			published by Parson Greshurh which i did not have no coppy of the 
			Same. they then mounted in there buggy and drove for Crawford and 
			a bout that time A. G. Black and Old Uncle Billey Downs and Aunt 
			Betsey Downs drove down too my house as the old people wanted to Stay 
			with us for a bit being once our old neighbors Several years ago after 
			A.G. Black remained with us for a bout too hours he then hitched his 
			teem too the wagon then mounted in the wagon then drove back to his
			place of a bode. as he had onley come to bring the Old folks too my 
			house. to Stay with us. for a while after conversing. a while with the
			old folks i then went to work and fed my hogs then Staked the calves 
			out on the grass. i then fed and watered my ox that i had tied up. 
			when through i then taken my teem. too my upper field and turn them 
			in to graze after Securing of the gates i then walked back too the 
			house then prepared wood for the Stove and fire. wood and brought it 
			in doors to be handy in the morning. then as the evenings meal was
			Served and on the table we all Seated our Selves too the table then 
			portaken of our evenings meal when we were through with our meal and 
			the Suppertable was cared far we then move in too our bed room. by a 
			good fire then the old folks did the talking whilst i finised recording 
			of the labor that had been performed on the premises. too day this has 
			been a very blusterous day all the day through. but to night it is 
			calmed down fixing for a frost. Now as the days work is done we will go
			to our bed or repose. by first asking the Lord to gard and protect us
			through the present night as he has through the day just. passed and 
			gone. and when done with these frail bodys of ours. to hand us down to 
			our grave in peace with the (Thee) and all man Kind and in heaven Save 
			us is my prayer to night.-Amen
