W.E. Costley at home near Middle Bosque creek on the breaks
Saturday October the 6th AD 1900 hundred Opened up quite a nice
day with some few milkey Scattering clouds in the Elements wind Sturing
but what was in circulation was from the South we were out or our bed
of repose quite earley this morning clothes on readey for buisiness.
after i had prepared wood for the Stove my wife Kindled the fire the
went to work to prepareing our mornings meal whilst i fed the fowls
and brought my teem from my field then fed them by that time my wife
had her morning meal Served and on the table. So we Seated our Selves
too the table then portaken of the Same after we were through with our
meal my wife milked her cows. whilst i watered my teem at the Bosque
after returning from the Bosque with my teem i put the plow geer on
them then drove up in too my Middle field near the Railroad hitch my
teem to my plow. then went to rebraking Some ground that was covered
with Johnson grass. i plowed untill about 12-Oclock from wich i turned
out and drove too the house ungeered and watered my teem at the barrel
i then fed them. i then come in doors washed my hands and face. by
that time my wife had the noons meal Served and on the table we then
Seated our Selves to the table then portaken of the Same, when through.
my wife attended too her dinner table and put evry thing a way in good
Shape, then She taken a rest for a bit whilst i went too work to record
what has been done on the premises up to too-O clock this evening. the
wind has Stired nicely to day for the first time in Several days past
The thermometer registered at too Oclock 90 Degrees tempature, this
evening although the wind is pleasant and nice but the Sun Comes down
with its heat with great power. after too - Oclock i geered Walker then
hitched him too the buggy i then mounted in my buggy then drove for
Crawford to take the Old lady Ball Some chickens and to by Some and
Lye for my wife as she was wanting lye to mak (make) Soap. after
purching the articles that i went after i mounted in my buggy then
drove for home Stopping at Mr Billmans to See the Sick as i returned
home after remaining with the familey for about one hour i then (bid)
them good by mounted my Self in my buggy then drove for home. after
arriving at home i dismounted mounted my Self from my buggy ungeered
my horse then tied him up then taken the tricks out of the buggy then
brought Judy down too the house put my wagon geer on her and walker
hitched them too my wagon then drove to Middle Bosque to water my teem
and to hall a barrel of water after the teem had dranked and i had
fill the barrel with water i then drove for my place after arriving
at my place we dismounted from my wagon ungeered my teem then tied
them up. untill my wife and my Self could Stake out the calves. after
getting of them Stake too grass i then taken my teem too my upper
field and turned them in too graze, after fastening of the gates i
walked back too my house washed my face and hands then we eat our
evenings meal as my (wife) had it Served and on the table. after we
were through with the meal and my wife had taken care of her Supper
table me moved intoo our bed room Seated our Selve too the tables
that we were accustomed to using then my wife began to patch Some
clothing that neaded renovating whilst i went to work to recording
the weather and the labors of the day. to day has been much cooler
than has been for Severa(l) days past about the time i got in a good
way a writing the cows got in too the field then my wife and my Self
had to lay evry thing down that we were engaged at, and go and get
them out of the field after getting through with the cattol we
returned back too the house then finished up our work, we then
prepare for our bed of rest by first asking the Lord to gard and
protect us through the present night as he has through the day
just passed a way. and when done with these frail bodys of ours
to hand us down to our grave in peace with the (Thee) and all man
Kind and in heaven Save us is my prayer too night Amen.
My wife and my Self are Still on foot to day but not very well

Sunday October the 7th. A.D. 1900 hundred being the lords day and a day
of rest. Opened up a very nice day with the exception of a wew (few)
clouds drifting around in the Elements at about 4- Oclock this morning
ther was a dard (dark) cloud arose in the North west with considerable
lightning and thunder in that direction passing off Southward and earley
this morning there was a heavey rainbow formed in the South west
indicating of a Storm the wind earley this morning was in North west but
as the day advanced it Shifted too the north but the Sun beems down warn
and Sickning. The ther mometer this morning registers 73 Degrees tempature
at an earley hour in the day. we were out of bed quite late this morning
on account of being a day of rest and we old people not feeling the best
in the world. but after we did a rise and get our clothes on our person
we then went too buisiness alwright. i prepared Stove wood then brought
it in doors and my wife Kindled the fire in the Stove whilst i fed the
fowls and hogs by that hour in the day my wife had the meal Served and
on the table readey for to be eat we then Seated our Selves too the table
and portaken of our mornings meal when through. I drove the calves down
too the pen for my wife too milk her cows She then went to milking her
cows i then Spent a bout one hour looking after Some turkeys that Sliped
off but did not find them. i returned too the house Seated my Self down
by my writing desk during the time i was resting then began too record
the weather and labor performed on the premises today up too nine oclock
in the morning when my wife was through with her milking and taken care
of her breakfast table and putting evry thing in order again She then
churned the milk whilst i taken a walk a round my field to look for the
place where one of the cows come in too my field on last night past after
finding of it i then built up the Same a gain after getting through i
then walked back too my house come in doors Seated my Self down in my
chair then taken a good rest as it appear to me to worry me a great deal
more So to work on the Sabbath than any other day in the week after
getting good rested i then walked up too my upper field above the
railroad and brought my teem down too my house the watered them at the
middle Bosque after returning with them too my lot i then fed them. I
then taken the advantage of the times and taken a nother rest as i was
not very well at any rate. about that time my wife finished churning
and the butter cared for Salted and put a way and the chruned washed and
put out to air for the next chruning. the She concluded to take a rest
also. as she was becoming Some what wearried from the Labor that She had
performed during the morning. The first Norther made its appearance on
the morning of October the 7th AD 1900 hundred on the Sabbath day of our
lord earley in the morning . at or near one Oclock this evening i walked up
too my upper field and brought my teem down too the house then put my Saddle
on walker mounted my Self on him led Judy and taken them too Middle Bosque
creek to water after they drank i brought them back too my lot then fed
them i then come in doors washed my hands and face then my wife and my
Self eat our noons meal when through and the dinner table cared far and
evry thing pertaining to the eating depart ment put a way we then occupied
our time in reading the news papers far Some time untill near four Oclock
from which i Saddled my horse mounted my Self on him then rode out in too
my pasture to look for Some turkeys that had left the place this morning i
did not find them in my pasture i then dismounted from my horse tied
him up then taken it a foot over in too Mr Dock coffmans pasture and after
looking out the timbered part theroughly (thoroughly) i found them i drove
them back in too my field then walked back too the public road to where my
horse (was) then mounted on him then rode for my place of a bode. after
arriving at my place i found that the turkeys had come on home i then
dismounted from my horse taken my Saddl off of him then led him and
Judy mare again. Then my wife and my Self taken the calve up the road
near the Railroad then Staked them on the Oat Stubble. after getting of
them Staked we then walked back too the hose (house) then my wife fed
her pigs whilst i taken my teem too the bosque to water. after returning
from the Bosque i taken them too my upper field then turned them in to
graze i then Secured the gates. i then walk on down too my house and
prepared Stove wood and fire place wood for the night and in the morning
and brought it in doors from that work we then eat our evenings meal
when through with our evenings meal my wife then taken care of her
Supper table and put evry thing in order for the meal we then moved in
too our bedroom and tried to make fire but failed in the atempt. so
my wife departed too her bed of repose. whilst i remained up to finish
recording of our days lobors and the weather of too day. the north wind
has blowed very brisk all day and Still blowing rapedley to night. a
great change in the weather 80 Degrees tempature was as high as the
thermometer rose to day. it has been clear and bright all day and is
still clear to night. Now as our days labor is over with i will go
too my bed of repose by first asking the Lord to gard and protect
us through the present night as he has through the day just passed
and gone. and when done with these frail bodys of ours here on earth
to hand us down too our grave in peace with the (Thee) and all man

Monday October the 8th AD 1900 hundred Opened up quite a cool morning
very cloudey wind Still from the north the thermometer this morning
registers 56 Degrees tempature the lowest that it has been this Summer
we were up out of bed quite earley this morning clothes on readey for
buisiness i fed the fowls then brought my teem down from my field
this morning then fed them. whilst my wife prepared our morning meal
after getting of it served and on the table we Seated our Selves too
the table then eat our mornings meal when through with our meal my
wife milked her cows whilst i watered then geered my teem and went to
plowing down the Johnson grass after getting through. i then drove too
the house then diped the water out of the barrel then taken the barrel
out of the wagon hitched my teem too my wagon i then mounted in too the
wagon then drove too the bosque brakes after a load of wood to take
to Crawford for Mr Tadlock after getting of my wood loaded i then drove
back too my place unhitched my teem from the wagon then watered and
fed them. I then eat my noons meal as my wife had it Served and on the
table. after we were through i then taken a rest for a Short bit then
put my teem too my wagon after my wife and my Self mounted our Selves
on the wagon i then drove for Crawford to deliver my wood too a man by
the name of Williamson a new comber to this country as he moved from
the west too McLennan after inloading of the wood and receiving the
money for the Same i then drove to Edwards black Smith Shop to get my
plow point Sharpened. after my work was finished i hitched up my teem
then drove down to Billey Tadlock to get my wife and Some oil but i
had to go too Grahams to get the Oil and Some Irish potatoes for my
wife after had purchased evry thing that was wanted for the present we
then mounted our Selves in our wagon then drove for our place of abode
after arriving at the Spot we dismounted from our wagon.i then ungeered
my teem tied old Judy too a post then put my Saddle on walker mounted
on him then rode up to Mr Graves to let his wife Know that Linda Costley
her Daughter was very low with typhoid fever as i had received a card
from J.M. Costley Stating the Same in regard to Linda being So low with
the fever of Several weeks Standing. after delivering of the news i
remaind with the familey So - 20 minutes, then bid the familey good by
mounted on my horse then rode for my place of abode. after arriving at
home. i dismounted from my horse pulled my Saddle off of him come in
doors and taken a warm. after i had warmed as i was quite certain that i
had a chill on me. as i become very cold on my way to Graveses and it
taken me Some time to warm up- and as fast as i become warm. i would
turn cold again. it is quite cloudey too as well as cold has the
appearance of cool weather. my wife has been quite buisey this evening
Staking her calves So She tells me and picking grass burs out of her
Stockings and frock tail and prepareing of the evenings meal. after
She had Served it then placed it on the table we Seated our Selves down
to the table then portaken of the Same after we were through with our
meal and the Supper table cared far we moved in too our bed room. my wife
occupied her wash Stand to put her light on in order that She could See
how to Seew as She had to Sew buttons on one of my Shirts after She was
through with the Shirt She the occupied her time in reading of the news.
untill i could finish recording of our days labor and giving a
discription of weather. Now as our days work is finished we will go too
our bed of repose as we are both very feble. not well by no means
by first asking the Lord to gard and protect us through the present
night as he has through the day just passed and gone and when done
with these feble bodys of ours to hand us down to our grave in peace
with the (Thee) and all man Kind and is heaven Save us is my prayer

Tuesday October the 9th AD 1900 Opened quite a cool cloudey morning
wind Still from the north east very cool The thermometer this morning
at an earley hour registered 52 Degrees My wife and my Self were out
of our bed quite late this morning as the weather was rather cool and
both was Sick with Severe colds but eventually we a rose from our bed
of Slumber clothed our person and it was with a difficult matter that
i was able to build on a fire as i had Such a pain in my head and was
So Sick at my Stomach but after So long a whild it become Some easier
than it had been my wife is also very poorley hardley able to drag.
but She made out to prepare the mornings meal after So long a while
after getting of it Served and placed on the table neither one of us
felt like eating but we made out to dink (drink) Some coffee and eat
a few bites. after we were through we Seated our Selves down by a good
fire and contented our Selves a waiting to feel better. but the better
part was Some little while making its appearance. after the morning
past a way my wife milked her cows. then to work as usual attending
too her breakfast table and putting her house in good Shape for the
day whilst i Still lingered a long not feeling much better nor not
doing any thing that would a mount to a great deal any way but at
this writing i am feeling Some better than i have felt this morning
but i only take it by Spells of feeling better and then more feble.
after the mornings meal was through with my wife then milked her cows
after She was through with the milking i put a forked Stick on one of
our cows to Keep her out of the field. then turned them out to graze
a gain i then come in doors and undertaken to write an answe (answer)
to a card that i received from J.M. Costley my Son near Goldthwait
in mills county Texas but made Slow Speed in regard to writing as i
felt So i then come indoors and remaind in doors by the fire as i had
a Severe hearting (hurting) in my head and it become So painful as to
cause me to have to drink Some clover root tea be fore i could get any
relief. at or near too-Oclock in the after noon after drinking Some
Irish potatoe Soop i walked too my upper field and brought my teem
to my house afterward i Saddled one of them then mounted my Self up
on him led the other one then taken them too the middle Bosque too
water. after they drank i then rode back to the lot then fed them. i
then Stopped The place in the fence where She had broke in._ by my
wife assisting me when we were Through we returned too the house and
my wife wrote aletter too her Son in Mills county Texas whilst i pre
pared Stove wood and fire place wood for night and morning and brought
the Stove wood in doors by that time i was willing to Stop off as
my head began to heart (hurt) me again. after getting Some easier i
then taken my horses back too my field too grase to night. The
thermometer at alate hour to day or evening rather Registered at
62 degrees tempature and appearantley turning cooler as the Sun goes
down and much cloudier thick and heavey and very dark in the South
east we have just Staked the calves on the grass. my wife is preparing
Some Soop for us to drink as we are not feeling well enough too want
to eat to night. I have been very feverish all day occasionley i would
feel The Lagripp Slip in too my person which would make my ake for a
while then it would pass off and come again at intervals Now as we have
drank our Soop (soup) and not feeling much like Sitting up we will go
too our bed of repose by first asking the Lord to gard and protect us
through the present night as he has through the day just passed and
gone. and when done with these bodys of ours to hand us down too our
grave in peace with the (Thee) and all man Kind and in heaven Save us
is my prayer to night
Clover root tea is good for headache drink and give it a trial

the 10th AD 1900 hundred Opened up quite a cloudey cool morning wind
earley in the morning was from the North west Thermometer registers
54 Degrees tempature earley in the morning. my wife and my Self out
of bed quite late this morning as neither one of us were well but
however at a late hour in the morning we a rose from our bed of
Slumber dresses our Selves then proceeded to get our cattle out of
the field as there was three head had broke in on the past night.
after getting them out and pened my wife proceeded to prepare the
morning meal whilst i did no more untill our mornings (meal)was
Served and eat when through with our meal my wife milked her cows
whilst i assisted her by bringing up the calves that we had Staked
out on the grass i then went in Search too find out where the Stock
had broke in too the field at last i found the in let being Some
what near the railroad rather north east from my house i patched it
up the best i could the walked across the railroad in too my upper
field caught and brought my teem too the house put the geer on them
hitched them too the wagon then mounted on the wagon in companey
with my wife then drove too the middle Bosque breaks for a load of
wood after arriving at the place i then loaded on the wood when
through we then drove for my place of abode after arrivind (arriving)
at the premises we dismounted from our wagon i then ungeered my
teem then put my Saddle on Walker mounted on him and led Old Judy
too water after they were done drinking i rode back home unsaddled
my horse then fed them. come in doors washed my hands and face then
eat our noons meal as my wife had huridly prepared the Same. after
we were through with the meal i geered my teem again hitched them
too my wagon then mounted up on the Same then drove for Crawford
with a load of wood for Alex Tadlock the cotton byer. after
arriving at the place i unloaded the wood to Allex Tadlock he then
payed me for the Same i then drove for my place of a bode coming by
Sam Clarys Saddle Shop and getting a box that he gave me, after i
returned home i drove too my Lott un hitched my teem then my wife
and i caught Six goblers put them in the coop that i got from Clary
that was in the wagon. after getting of them loaded. my wife and my
Self mounted in the wagon then drove too the Section house with the
turkeys as my wife had Sold to Mrs Finnie the a mount that we take
after delivering the Turkeys too the boarding Lady i then drove back
too my place taken the coop out of my wagon then put my water barrel
in my wagon i then drove too Middle Bosque my wife accompaning me to
hall a barrel of water after getting of my barrel filled i then drove
back too my place ungeered my teem then fed them my wife then turned
her calves in too the field then Staked them out on the corn and grass
whils(t) i prepared Stove wood and fire place wood for night and
morning then brought it in doors we then eat our evening meal So Soon
as we were through with the meal and my wife had taken care of her
Supper table we then mooved in too our bed room each one occupying
his own light and table my wife occupyed her few Spare moments reading
of the waco news, whilst i finished up recording of the labors that
was done on the premises to day and also the weathers and its changes
throught out too day after nine Oclock this morning the wind Shifted
too the East, and at a bout half past five Oclock this evening it
changed back too the north, and become very cool although it is as
clear as a chrystal, Now as we are through with our work we will go
too our bed of repose by first asking the Lord too gard and protect
us through the present night as he has through the day just passed
and gone, and when done with these frail bodys of ours to hand us
down to our graves in peace with the (Thee) and all man Kind and in
heaven Save us is my prayer too night---Amen.
