BIRD PIERCE
SARAH SCOGGIN MARY ELDORA PIERCE
Bird Pierce was born in Tennessee
in 1836. He came to Texas with his mother
Sabina and brother Young
Pierce. He is listed on the first Coryell County Tax
Roll compiled in 1854. In
September 1855 Bird married Sarah Scoggin,
daughter of Jesse Scoggin.
Jesse had moved to Sugar Loaf from Izard County
Arkansas in the early 1850's
and he and Bird and Jesse's son Isaac were
involved in several land
transactions. Bird Pierce, Jesse and Isaac Scoggin
lived as close neighbors
about two miles northwest of Sugar Loaf mountain
on the Cowhouse. This area
later was known as Pottersville where there
was a bridge crossing the
Cowhouse. The Scoggin homestead became
known as "Fort Scoggin"
and a place for the community to gather during Indian
raids. Bird and Sarah had
three children - Mary Eldora, born 15 October
1856, Sabina, born 1859
and Frances born 1860/61. On May 20, 1862 Bird
enlisted in Company D 17th
Texas Volunteer Infantry also known as Allen's
Regiment. He became sick
in December of tyhoid and pneumonia at Camp
Nelson in Prairie County
Arkansas. In January 1863 he was sent to the Pine
Bluff Hospital where he
died from pneumonia on March 3, 1863. In February
1867 Sarah married a man
that, as unlikely as it seems, was also named Bird.
Bird Clements returned from
the Civil War and after he and Sarah were married,
moved the family to Taylor's
Branch in Bell County near Sparta where Bird had
pre-empted 160 acres. Bird
was a teacher at the Sparta School the Pierce
girls attended. In early
1870 Bird and Sarah became dissatisfied with the land
and with a single yoke oxen
wagon pulled by two steers moved to Cass County.
James Clements, Bird's father,
had moved from Cass County to Sugar Loaf about
1850. In Cass County Mary
Eldora Pierce married Lewis Carlile in 1872 and they
had seven children. Frances
married Wiley H. Brown in 1874 and they had two
children. Bird Clements
died in Cass County in 1881. When Lewis Carlile and
Mary Eldora moved to Hood
County Sarah went with them and lived with Lewis
the rest of her life. Sarah
died in 1901 and is buried at Bronte, Texas.
